Sciences, engineering and health care, are the main fields where skilled workers are required in Germany, with staffing difficulties occurring in the different sectors also depending on the level of qualification.

According to the Federal Government website, the demand for qualified workers depends on there are three categories of workers required; skilled professionals who have completed at least two years of vocational training or similar qualification; specialists who are workers that have a craftsperson or technician training and experts with a four-year university education, SchengenVisaInfo reports.
From the first group; those that have at least two years of vocational training, the following professions are required:
- Underground work
- Maintenance and installation of electric circuits
- Sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology
- Canal and tunnel construction
- Elderly care
- Well construction
Additionally, specialists, indicating those that have a technician or craftsperson’s training or similar qualification, are needed for occupations like supervision in underground work, plumbing, sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology. Specialists in tax counselling, physiotherapy, ergotherapy and speech therapy are also in demand.
As per experts, all graduates from a four-year university program in the following fields could be welcomed to get employed in Germany:
- Physicians specialised in internal medicine
- Professions in software development
- Lawyers
- Physicians specialised in anaesthesiology
- Supervision, emergency medical services, management, nursing
- Pharmacists
The chances of engaging in a traineeship in Germany have increased with the economy in the country constantly growing. There were a total of 63,176 open vacancies as of 2021, up from 37,101 in 2014. The vocational training courses in the country are open to EU nationals, as well as people that are from the EU. Those are a good chance to enter the German labour market.
A recent study reveals that the shortage of skilled workers is mainly noticed in craft and technical professions, while an increase in the logistics sector and a high demand for IT is evident.
According to a survey, skilled workers in construction and skilled trades, with a total of 349,275 jobs available and technical specialists (282,941 jobs), are in demand in the German labour market. In the previous years, these two groups represented 36.6 per cent of the published and evaluated job offers in July 2022.
Furthermore, sales and distribution specialists, with 232,347 jobs, were listed fourth in the list of top ten most sought-after occupational groups in July, while in the third spot are listed occupations for health, medicine and social services.
Another 25.1 per cent job growth is noticed in transport, traffic, and logistics, while spots from six to nine belong to occupational groups of office management, finance and accounting, IT and telecommunication and project management.
