1 Customize your resume and cover letter
One of the most common mistakes job seekers make is to send the same resume and cover letter to every employer. This shows a lack of research, interest, and relevance. Instead, you should tailor your resume and cover letter to each job posting, highlighting the specific skills, experiences, and achievements that match the requirements and expectations of the role. Use keywords and phrases from the job description, and quantify your results with numbers, percentages, or awards. This will help you pass the initial screening by applicant tracking systems (ATS) and human reviewers.

Completely agree, Alisha. It's also important to have a CV that is aligned with the role and highlights the right keywords for the sector and position they're applying for. The other piece to note is having a CV that isn't too complex or over-designed; modern ATS (applicant tracking systems) don't always scan the data, and as lovely as the CV may be, during the uploading stage (called CV parsing), some of the details may be cut off.

Use the job advert to understand the key components an organisation is looking for. Often this will be a combination of what they are looking for and what you can bring. Don't be afraid to reach out to the recruiter or talent team before you apply. Not only can the conversation often aid how you put your application together but this connection means your application will stand out because you've already drawn attention to it.

2 Optimize your online profile
Another way to stand out to recruiters and hiring managers is to have a professional and engaging online profile, such as LinkedIn. Your online profile is your digital resume, portfolio, and personal brand. It should showcase your skills, accomplishments, and personality in a clear and concise way. Use a high-quality photo, a catchy headline, a summary that highlights your value proposition, and a list of relevant skills and endorsem*nts. Also, include examples of your work, such as projects, publications, or testimonials. Make sure your profile is updated, complete, and consistent with your resume.

3 Build your network and reputation
Networking is not only about finding job opportunities, but also about building relationships and reputation in your field. By connecting with people who share your interests, goals, and values, you can increase your visibility, credibility, and trust among potential employers. You can network online or offline, by joining professional groups, attending events, reaching out to mentors, or engaging in discussions. You can also showcase your expertise and passion by creating and sharing valuable content, such as blogs, podcasts, or videos. This will help you demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and personality, and attract the attention of recruiters and hiring managers who are looking for talent like you.

When thinking of your reputation, the first question to ask yourself is "Who knows about you and how can I help more people?" I started YouTubing in 2008, podcasting in 2010, and blogging in 2001. Content sharing with comments may be the first step but having your own opinions and being willing to say them publically will help more people know about you. My first client was referred by the CMO of a European firm. I'd never spoken with him or communicated with him but he thought I could help his friend (I did). I'd put myself out there, created a memorable brand, and impressed him. You can do that, too. Start today.

4 Prepare for the interview
Once you have secured an interview, you have a chance to impress the recruiter or hiring manager with your communication skills, confidence, and enthusiasm. To prepare for the interview, you should research the company, the role, and the interviewer. You should also review your resume and cover letter, and practice answering common and behavioral questions. You should also prepare some questions to ask the interviewer, to show your interest and curiosity. During the interview, you should dress professionally, be punctual, polite, and positive. You should also follow up with a thank-you note, expressing your appreciation and interest in the position.

5 Be yourself
The final tip on how to stand out to recruiters and hiring managers is to be yourself. While it is important to highlight your skills and achievements, it is also important to show your personality and fit with the company culture. You should be authentic, honest, and respectful, and avoid exaggerating or lying about your qualifications or experience. You should also be open to feedback, learning, and growth, and show your passion and motivation for the job. By being yourself, you will not only stand out from the competition, but also find a job that matches your values, goals, and aspirations.

Far too many business professionals either undersell themselves or go the opposite and oversell their careers and value. Embellishing is not good, this action will come to the surface during due diligence and the interview.Just be authentic, be YOU! Be proud and confident in YOU.Being YOU will sell you more than positioning YOU as something YOU aren't.
